Our approach
My clients are accomplished and successful. They are passionate about what they do, driven by purpose, caring, and committed to building relationships with their patients, their staff, their colleagues, and their community. And . . . they’ve all struggled at some point, perhaps in the some of the same ways you are now.
I am dedicated to one purpose: helping healthcare practitioners and teams develop their resilience, self-management skills, and interpersonal effectiveness to succeed and make a difference in today’s rapidly changing environment.
Our clients report consistent results
They take control of their practice and experience less stress, work shorter hours, and simultaneously see revenues increase. Most clients find that pushing harder for what they want isn’t the answer. Instead, they develop better self-management and interpersonal skills, which translate into sustainable success.
They get creative. By developing and implementing marketing plans and strategies that are in alignment with their unique practice style, clients find that their practices grow naturally. Instead of attending a seminar or throwing money at a problem, they become resourceful and find ideas that work over time, not just one time.
They assemble high-functioning teams. By improving their communication and leadership skills, practitioners find that they are better able to attract and retain the best employees.
They make better decisions. Guided by a positive vision, authenticity, and an attitude of abundance, decisions are rooted in solid strategy and driven by the desire to achieve meaningful goals. Choices based on self-trust, intuition, and long-term objectives are superior to those based on fear, competition, and short-term gratification.
They enjoy going to work again. By shifting their focus to what is most important to them, practitioners spend their time on high-leverage activities such as direct patient care, strategic planning, and engaging with their team. Stressing about trivial details, they say, is for people who haven’t found a better way.
What you can expect
Assuming you are both responsible and accountable, you can expect enhanced productivity and profitability, improved skills for managing conflict, new techniques for use in times of challenge or stress, and greater ease in managing your team. You can expect to gain clarity about your goals and purpose. You can expect to let go of unproductive ways of thinking about practice management and begin to focus on what works instead of what doesn’t work. You can expect to be motivated and fully engaged in both delivering care and in growing and managing your practice. You can expect to embrace change rather than resist it. You can expect new insights, many of which will surprise you. And, finally, you can expect to be unconditionally supported during our work together.

"Working with Shelley arms you with the tools needed to get through life on a personal and professional basis and she does it
without judging. If you truly want to grow as a person while growing your practice, she'd be the one to talk to."
— Vickie Campbell, Dental Office Manager
What Beyond Practice Management stands for
My philosophy is that you build your practice by building yourself. By increasing your capacity to lead, you establish the foundation to build an extraordinary team, a reliable system to deliver care, and satisfied patients who grow your practice for you. You do this by building skills and mastering change so that you can achieve both current and future goals.
You are unique. My services are unique. When I work with clients they rediscover deep trust in themselves and others, learn new relationship and communication strategies, and become the leaders they need to be in order to have the practice they desire.
Developing transferable skills. A program is only as good as your ability to implement it over the long term. Our solutions will help you build skills and competencies that can be applied not only to your current situation, but also adapted to future conditions as they arise.
I believe measurable results matter. Before beginning our work together, we will establish objective and subjective criteria for tracking progress. We will monitor your progress throughout our work, whether that work is coaching, consulting, or team building activities.
Consider a different approach
Building a healthy practice requires a new approach. The problem is not that practitioners don’t know what to do; the problem is maintaining momentum in the face of change and challenge. My approach is based on the following core principles and models:
- Self-management (the missing variable in most practice management programs).
- Interpersonal effectiveness, communication and leaderships skills.
- Experiential adult learning, feedback, and skill development.
- Deep inquiry and reflective practices.
- Emotional Intelligence (EQ).
- Change mastery and management.
- The Hudson Institute’s Cycle of Renewal.
- Outcomes based on pre-determined criteria for success.
- Results that are measurable and meaningful.
There are only so many ways to build a successful practice. You have probably tried different approaches, with varying results. You can work “on your practice” (the domain of conventional practice management), or you can work on yourself and the relationship you have with your practice. This latter focus is where Beyond Practice Management excels. I assume you already know how to operate your practice and focus instead on the development of attitudes and skills that will enable you to close the gap between your current reality and envisioned future.
The benefits of working with Beyond Practice Management include:
- Clarity of vision and goals
- Measurable outcomes
- Sustainable practice growth
- Enhanced profitability
- Time and boundary management
- Increased patient satisfaction
- Development of leadership skills
- Team-building and staff development
- Enhanced staff satisfaction and retention
- Skills for managing conflict and confrontation
- Less anxiety about your career, improved life balance
- Self-management techniques for use in times of challenge or stress
- Expanded self-awareness and emotional intelligence
- Renewed passion for work
The Beyond Practice Management advantage
Depth of experience. My approach is derived from more than two decades of working as a consultant, coach, and educator with practitioners like you. I’ve been where you are right now — in private practice myself for many years. I keep up on the latest in healthcare, business, and management and share cutting edge ideas with my clients. I’ll bring this experience to our relationship and make it my personal mission to see you accomplish your goals and objectives.
I work with a limited number of clients at any given time, usually no more than twenty. This means that when you need to reach me, you will. It means that when we are engaged in coaching or consulting, you have my undivided attention. And it means that long after our work is complete I’ll still remember you, your staff, your situation, and the results you achieved. The needs of my clients are paramount. I won’t offer you prepackaged solutions to someone else’s problems. Our relationship will allow you to develop solutions of your own — ones that work for you.
